Sharing files on a [Home] LAN

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

I have a BSNL wireless router and two computers. One is a desktop system , choke full of hardd drives and the other is a laptop. Both run Mandriva 2008 GNU/Linux . Both the computers are connected wirelessly to the router [ I am afraid of wired connections - a lightning strike once fried my router and the desktop's network card ]. Naturally , I  want to back up data over the network to my desktop from my laptop.

No rsync stuff here.  Just an occasional copy paste should suffice. So I asked around and looked on the net and found that most people run Samba or NFS mount the remote partition or use ssh-fuse.

Me being very very lazy , didnt want to do any setup. I had sshd running on both computers so i could occasionally shut down the Desktop from my laptop or update it. I was very disappointed.

That is , until I found that konqueror’s KIO slaves include something called a ‘fish’ protocol. Now this was a very welcome news.

All I had to do was type in  ‘fish://remote.computers.IP’ into konqueror’s address bar and he will automatically open a dialogue which asks for your username and password on the remote computer. And when you enter the password……..Thats it !! . Konqueror will open the default file management view at the remote users home directory.

No other thing is required except sshd .

This was an awesome find. And one more reason to say “കോണ്‍ക്വെറര്‍ പുലിയാണു് കേട്ടാ !!”

Superwomen

I cleaned my room today.

No i didn’t mean the chumma dusting up. i cleaned the whole room. Took all stuff out and then vacuumed dusted, washed the floor. In short a full overhaul.

The reason : I start sneezing as soon as i get into my room and the obvious culprit was all the dust accumulated. Since I have banned my mom from cleaning my room , dust accumulated fast.

Since i made a mess on the front steps and the small courtyard ( മുറ്റം ) I cleaned them as well . The cats , though perplexed , were gracious enough to sit around and listen to my rants during the whole time.

The room and the courtyard.

Aah now , to the subject of the post.

Its a theorem:

You are likely to meet a superwoman everyday in your life

Super woman is the woman of today who balances a job , kids and house work and still manages to spend some time with her husband. They are amazing. Really.

I know two. One is my mother , the other is my sister. My sister all the more because she works as a software engineer and by the time she comes home , her mind is numb . But she still manages to play with the kids , bathe – feed and get them to go to bed .

I work , but when i get back home, i either sit around chumma or go read a book.

The theorem occurred to me because i was so tired after doing the cleanup . Washing the floor was a bit more kashtam than the rest of the chores. And to imagine that my mom does it twice a week to all the rooms.

So from now on , i am going to wash the floor . Twice a week.

A new find – Project Euler

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Reading xkcd BLAG has its advantages. I landed at Project Euler ( ഒയ്‌ലര്‍ ) during one of my long XKCD sessions.

According to its about page ,

“Project Euler is a series of challenging mathematical/computer programming problems that will require more than just mathematical insights to solve. Although mathematics will help you arrive at elegant and efficient methods, the use of a computer and programming skills will be required to solve most problems.”
